Trauma Informed Mental Health First Aid

Real Understanding. Real Support. Not Just A Tick-Box.

Mental health first aid training has become increasingly common in workplaces. But many programmes focus primarily on theory, checklists and policies.

At The Mental Wellbeing Company, we believe something important is often missing. Because when someone is struggling with their mental health, they may not always say so.

They may say they are fine. They may say everything is okay. Yet their nervous system, body language and behaviour may be communicating something very different.

This is where trauma informed mental health first aid makes all the difference.

Our programmes teach people how to recognise both psychological and physiological cues of distress so they can respond with understanding, compassion and confidence.

This is not about turning people into therapists. It is about equipping individuals with the knowledge, awareness and practical tools to support mental wellbeing safely and effectively.

What Makes Our Training Different

Most mental health first aid programmes take a top-down approach focusing mainly on thoughts, emotions and behavioural signs. Our training also teaches a bottom-up nervous system approach.

This means participants learn to recognise how stress, overwhelm and trauma responses can show up physically in the body. Because someone may say they are fine, but their nervous system may be signalling something else. Participants learn to recognise signs such as:

  • changes in breathing patterns
  • signs of nervous system activation or shutdown
  • subtle behavioural shifts
  • emotional regulation difficulties
  • physiological stress responses

Understanding these cues allows people to respond with greater awareness and compassion. It allows them to create safer conversations and more supportive environments, and it helps individuals know how to signpost people towards appropriate support when needed.

This is what makes our programmes stand out.

A Trauma Informed Approach To Mental Health First Aid

Our training is grounded in trauma informed principles and nervous system education. Participants learn:

  • how stress and trauma affect the nervous system
  • why people respond differently to pressure and challenge
  • how to recognise early signs of distress
  • how to respond safely and appropriately
  • how to have supportive conversations
  • how to signpost individuals towards professional support

This approach helps create psychologically safer workplaces and communities, where people feel understood rather than judged.
